REVIEW: The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren

The Ones Who Got Away - Roni Loren

This book was amazing. It was completely different from everything else I've been reading, and it was exactly what I needed. I was a little hesitant going into it, because of the school shooting... I was worried that the book was going to spend a lot of time on that subject and the events. And while the events definitely influenced everything that happens in the book, it wasn't the sole focus.

I loved everything about this book. I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

REVIEW: Moonlight Sins (de Vincent, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Moonlight Sins - Jennifer L. Armentrout

OMG. This book was just amazing. I’m talking, can’t put down pure awesomness.

I’ll admit, prior to starting this book, I’d seen reviews online and they made me question my decision to read this. Yeah, they were all good reviews, but some of the things that were being said left me feeling like this wasn’t going to be a book for me. Or at least, not at the moment. What if I hated it!? I love JLA’s books. I haven’t read a bad one yet. But what if this was the first? What if it was awful!? So, with much trepidation, I opened my kindle and started. And I’ll be honest…the only reason this book wasn’t read in one sitting is because I’ve been sick with a cold. No matter how hard I tried, I kept dozing off. And every time I dozed off, I’d dream about the book, just to wake up and start the process all over again.

This book definitely stuck with me while reading. I just couldn’t get enough of it. Yes, it’s a romance (heavy on the romance *wiggling eyebrows*, but at the same time, it’s so much more. It has mystery, suspense, secrets, intrigue! I loved the characters and the way the story unfolded. Bit by bit, like peeling an onion. Each reveal kept me trapped in my kindle, waiting for the next thing I’d learn about the characters.

I loved Lucian and Julia. I loved watching them banter and dance around each other. I loved watching them get to know each other. They just kept me enthralled. Honestly, when the book was over, I wasn’t ready to let them go. I wanted more. I wanted to see more of them making their life together, being a team and see where their future goes.

I really loved how entranced Lucian was with Julia. When he told her about his family history, and how the de Vincent men fall hard and fast, you could see it happening to him, even as he wasn’t ready to admit it. I loved how protective he was, how he couldn’t stay away from her. Every time they were together, it was pure magic.

While I was definitely a little hesitant going in, this book ended up being amazing. I hated that it ended and wanted to stay with the characters longer. I can’t wait for the next book!

REVIEW: The Road to You by Melissa Toppen

The Road to You - Melissa Toppen

I love Melissa Toppen's books. She always takes me on a roller-coaster (which is ironic since I actually hate roller coasters!

I loved how the book started with a scene from the past, with Kam and Elara. The auto really did a great job of showcasing the friendship, affection and love between Kam and Elara.

Even though I had all the faith in the world that the author would make me love this story, I was worried. With all the "flashbacks"/past scenes, I just couldn't see how Elara was going to end up with Kane. Would it be believable!? Would there be chemistry!? Would it feel like he was just a replacement for Kam!?

I honestly shouldn't have worried, because the author took her time. Setting up the friendship and eventual relationship between Kane and Elara. I loved seeing them slowly fall for each other as their friendship developed. But, like I said...roller-coaster...I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it did. I was practically reading with my eyes closed because I couldn't watch as things blew up.

Things definitely blew up. I was expecting it, just not quite in the way it happened. But it had to happen so that there wouldn’t be any issue or confusion between the characters as to who was being chosen and why.

I have to say that I loved the way Kane loved Elara. I loved seeing him so into her and how much he wanted her.

This book definitely surprised me, in such a good way, and I definitely recommend it!

REVIEW: Naked Choke by Celia Loren

Naked Choke: A Stepbrother MMA Romance - Celia Loren

Oh boy. So, it's common knowledge that I've been on a stepbrother kick. So color me intrigued when I read the blurb of this book and find not one, but TWO stepbrothers! The down side is a potential love triangle...not a huge fan of them...and this book exemplified all of those reasons.

It actually started out ok. Nice set up, good into to the brothers...then I felt like not much happened for a while. During the time that I should have been getting to know the characters, I felt like there was precious little time spent with Logan and Austen, so I really didn't know them.

Austen...from what I did know about him, he was too good to be true. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and I even had a theory of what would come out about him. Just for the record...I was right.

Logan. He was a horse of a different color. For most of the book, he was also a mystery. But when Cat ran into him in Denver, I knew for sure then, that he would be the end game of the book. He and Cat actually sat and talked, trading secrets that the rest of the family didn't know about them. It was the first time I'd really gotten to know one of the guys.

My biggest issue ended up being with Cat and the love triangle itself. Like I said, I'm not a huge triangle fan, but I hated how this played out.

Austen made his play as soon as he met Cat. They started secretly dating and things were going fine...except Cat was also attracted to Logan. When Cat pressed Austen about going public with their relationship, he freaked and walked out on her, leading to him cheating on her. So immediately, Cat cries on Logan's shoulder, one thing leads to another and they get together and profess their love. All this happens without Cat and Austen officially breaking up. Austen lies about cheating, saying he only kissed the other girl and Cat feels guilty, preventing her from breaking up with him.

(show spoiler)

So both guys get hurt by Cat's indecision and guilt. And the whole triangle caused family problems.

My other issue was that everything took so long to happen. 41% of the book, things got physical between Austen and Cat. 61%, they had problems. 64% Cat and Logan get together and from there, it was drama and who will she choose in the end.

This book wasn't all bad, but it didn't work for me. Maybe if so much time hadn't been spent with one guy for her to jump over to the second guy...I don't know. It just was off for me.

REVIEW: Calling Card by Ashley Suzanne

Calling Card - Ashley Suzanne

After coming off a horrible read, I didn’t know what to read next. I spent the longest time going through my kindle, looking at what was on it, looking up those books, hoping something would jump out at me. Nothing did…until this.

I’ve had this on my kindle for a while. But kept putting it off. I deeply regret that now. I devoured this in one sitting. I absolutely loved it. It was just what I needed, so it’s probably a good thing I put it off until now.

The book is told entirely from Dex’s POV. That was interesting and unique. You don’t often find a book solely from the guy’s POV. I think it worked here. Granted, I wish I’d been able to see into Briar’s head a few times, but Dex’s story was so interesting that I’m not ticked that I didn’t see into her head.

As the blurb indicates, Dex is a manwhore. He had a well honed system of leaving his card with a rating on the back. It was an interesting system to say the least. Yes, the ratings were not cool under any circumstances but he did have a system that provided a story. When a story was written about him, things were revealed and his calling card system was revealed, people are canceling contracts with him left and right and vilifying him in the press. Dex did make a good point during this…at no time did he ever mess with a model or business contact. The women he had one-night-stands with were random women he met in bars. He never jeopardized his career, contacts or contracts. But I loved his friendship with Briar and her daughter. He was so sweet with them and right where he belonged. I have to say that his family story was just heartbreaking. When he found something his father left him, I started crying. It was so sweet and sad.

As I was looking this up on to see what it’s about, I realized that this will be my first book by Ashley Suzanne and I’m shocked by that. I know I’ve got many of her books on my TBR list, some on my kindle and at least one on my book shelf (I met her, she’s awesome!) so I was extremely surprised that I hadn’t actually read one of her books before. I really enjoyed that so I’ll definitely be picking up more from her in the future.

REVIEW: Sinister Kisses by Adriana Noir

Sinister Kisses - Adriana Noir

I love books with hot alphas that are protective and willing go dish out some revenge on behalf of the heroine. But with that said, I don’t like it when they turn that temper on the heroine and scare the living daylights out of her in emotional and psychological abuse. And that was exactly what I kept feeling with this one.

This book isn’t my typical cup of tea. But, I was feeling a book funk coming on and needed something different. Plus, one of my friends has been begging me for almost a year to read this. So, since it was totally different, I thought I’d give it a try.

I didn’t hate the book…but I definitely didn’t love it. It was a so-so read that unfortunately I didn’t get sucked into and consequently, I was left wondering what I’m going to read next before I’d hit the 50% mark. My biggest issue really was the way Sebastian treated Taylor. I was promised by my friend that I would come to understand why he was the way he was but for me, there really was no excuse. With every action, I saw him as more of a bully who had anger issues and was abusive.

Over the course of the book, there were a couple times Sebastian had gotten physical with his sister, leaving red marks on her so I figured it was just a matter of time before he did something to Taylor. Sure enough, he puts her “under protection” and effectively tells her she’ll be a prisoner in the house, unable to leave unless he’s with her. As any level headed person would react, Taylor wasn’t happy about that. No matter how nice his house is (and it’s a freaking mansion with everything you could want in a house) it would still be a prison. This leads Sebastian to tell her if she wants a real jail, he can accommodate her and that leads to an argument, some hair pulling, dragging across the room and a gun to her head with an accompanying threat to her life being the only way she can leave him. SO I was left scratching my head as to why she loves this guy. And Taylor finally started to realize what she’d gotten herself into with him after that. Unfortunately, a little explaining by Sebastian, his partner Josh and Sebastian’s sister leads Taylor to believe that Sebastian’s actions are ok and excusable and justified and it’s all hunky-dory again…leaving me pissed off and beyond happy when the book came to an end.

Overall…this book was so not the book for me. I love romance novels. I don’t mind suspension of disbelief and how things are too perfect or happen in cheesy ways at times the way they wouldn’t happen in real life…it’s fun and it’s entertainment. But crap like this, abusive guys like this, happen every day. This book was not fun for me. I didn’t even cover some of the worst parts, just hitting on a big one, but this book left me pissed off and there was one event in particular that left me leaking a few tears because it was awful. I think it was mentioned in a review somewhere that this was a cliffhanger…and that’s not exactly the case. Yes, it’s left open for another book but for me, this had an ending that left me glad I didn’t have to go on to the next book. Taylor picked the abusive a—hole, they were together and “happy” and they got the bad guy. Game, set, match. I’m done.

Initially, when I started the book, before it went bad, I was talking about the characters and dream cast pics to help picture them as I read and I found a hot guy for Sebastian but after the way I was left feeling, I’m not going to embellish this with that photo. The book doesn’t deserve it.

Reading progress update: I've read 66%.

Sinister Kisses - Adriana Noir

This book and I are not getting along. Assuming I make it to the end, I don't see me continuing with the series.

REVIEW: Hold On by Kristen Ashley

Hold On (The 'Burg Series) (Volume 6) - Kristen Ashley

Hold On by Kristen Ashley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series has been a rollercoaster for me. Mostly good, some ok and a really bad moment. This book ranks right at the top of the experience. I don’t always have the best luck with KA books…the guys piss me off, the chicks never have enough backbone and on some occasions, it’s just an all around bad story. But this book…was amazing from page 1. I freely admit that I had very little interest in this book. I had no interest in Cher and I especially didn’t want her for Merry.

However, from page one, I was drawn into Cher and Merry’s story. I couldn’t help but love Cher when you saw how strong she was, how tough. She didn’t roll over and submit to Merry like many other KA heroines do. I don’t mind some of that, but it always seemed like when a heroine in a KA book would try to stand up for herself, and the hero said something opposite, she gave in asap. And I hate seeing that. Ok fine, you’re going to give in, but make a valiant effort to assert your position first and make yourself heard. Cher was good about standing up for herself and her son. She made her position known, and at times she may have freaked out a little much, but she didn’t bow down and just let Merry take over.

I loved how their relationship progressed, how it wasn’t love at first sight and they took time building a relationship, not only between Cher and Merry but Merry and Ethan. Merry didn’t hold himself back from the insta-family either. He was all for it and embraced it. My one issue was with Merry’s “issues”. I just had a hard time believing that flowers would set him off and wondered how he hasn’t interacted with flowers in 20+ years. But I was glad that Merry listened to Alec and stuck it out with Cher. I also loved that Cher didn’t let him wallow in it and confronted him to set things right.

Overall, this was a great book. I hate to see the series end because overall, I did enjoy the series. But seeing as this is the end, I enjoyed the epilogue and seeing where everyone from the series ends up in the future.

REVIEW: Property Of...by CP Smith

Property Of - CP Smith

I loved the concept of this book. I loved that Nicola was an author. I loved her process and how her friends got caught up in the research for her first contemporary book.

Dallas was a great alpha. I loved the way that Dallas and Nicola met. I died laughing. And every "meet" after that was pure gold. I actually wish there had been more time they spent either together or dancing around each other before they were drawn into the murder mystery.

With each book, I think the author gets better and better at the insta-love theme. The whole book takes place over a couple of weeks, but it feels like months (in a good way). So much happens that you forget that Dallas and Nicola just met.

My one complaint (and this was a personal thing) was how during certain events in the book, Nicola would start telling it in a historical romance narrative and while it was ok, and worked in the scene in the bar, every other time, I would have preferred to read the actual events. Like I said, it was a personal opinion.

Overall, I've really come to enjoy this author's work and I look forward to her next book.

3. Save Settings in your Blogger blog’s Settings.

4. Go to your BookLikes Settings/Blog and add the blogger address. This is really crucial as the ability to cross post depends on it. Make sure to add the same e-mail address as the one in your Blogger’s settings. Thanks to this secret e-mail you’ll be able to post from BookLikes to your Blogger blog.

5. Save Settings in your BookLikes Settings.

6. Write a post and mark Blogger icon (green = active) to publish the post and review on both of your blogs.

On BookLikes

On Blogger

Your BookLikes blog post title will be your post's title on the Blogger blog. The text will be cross posted including the images and links. Some basic formatting should be also applied to your Blogger post automatically, including rating stars. Bare in mind, however, that some differences in the post’s look can happen because of different blog themes and synchronization restrictions. Some minor delays may also occur.

Synchronizations with other platforms are in progress.

Do you remember about other synchronizations on BookLikes?

BookLikes and Your Social Media (Facebook, Twitter)

You can cross post links to your texts to your Facebook and Twitter profiles by connecting your social media profiles in Settings and activating social icons in the writing box (green = active).

BookLikes and Your Goodreads

You can also synchronize your Goodreads and BookLikes accounts. The sync can be switched on in Settings/Import -- when connecting open your Goodreads page in the second tab and authorize the app, only then the synchronization will be switched on.

BookLikes -> Goodreads synchronization allows you to update your shelf, post reviews, add ratings and shelves. The synchronization works one way from BookLikes TO Goodreads, this means that when you add a book to your BookLikes shelf, post a reviews on your BL blog, add/edit rating starts or add a new shelf all those activities will be mirrored on your Goodreads account.

The BookLikes -> Goodreads synchronization works only one way and cannot be performed for your past activities.

Goodreads synchronization is a different mechanism than book import of a csv file from Goodreads. We recommend switching on the BookLikes -> Goodreads synchronization after the book import is completed.

BookLikes and Your Kindle

The synchronization with your Kindle lets you post your reading progress updated on your BookLikes blog straight from your Kindle. Switch on the connection in Settings/General -- first connect your twitter account and switch on the Kindle synchronization.

To post on BookLikes via the Kindle follow the schemes  "...%"    or    "...% and your comment".

Have a look at the examples:

* If you write and share percent only, e.g.:     10%     on your Twitter from your Kindle, your book progress will be updated on your BookLikes Shelf.

** If you write and share percent and your comment, e.g.:     10% so far I love it!     on your Twitter from your Kindle, your book progress will be updated on your BookLikes Shelf and a post with "Reading progress updated" and your comment will be published on your BookLikes blog.

REVIEW: The Duff by Kody Keplinger

The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend - Kody Keplinger

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book. I haven’t been big on high school/YA books for a while now, but this worked for me. But I’ll also confess that I really only pushed to read this book because I wanted to see the movie version of it.

I enjoyed Bianca and Wesley’s story. I loved their interaction and how he ended up being the person she turned to, not only to distract herself but for comfort. Every moment of them in this book made me really excited to see it play out on screen. It didn’t matter if they were fighting, bickering, talking, or kissing, I loved every scene they had together. I especially loved the note he left on her desk and the letter he sent her with the flowers. One of the things I loved most about the relationship between Bianca and Wesley was that they started out as enemies and it turned into an enemy with benefits relationship. They still fought, she still hated him…but she couldn’t stay away. That was different from most other books with a manwhore character. And of course, while they were enemies with benefits, things started changing and a real relationship started developing.

My biggest issue with the book came in Bianca’s relationship with her parents. I actually thought it was interesting that her mom left her dad and her dad fell apart because of it. But Bianca forgave her mom too quickly when she did show up again. Speaking of things happening too quickly…things with her dad were resolved too quickly after they turned ugly. It just wasn’t believable. Maybe the author left the return of the mom and ugly scene with the dad for too late in the book and she was rushed? But any way you looked at it, the resolution happened too fast. And the sad thing is, both parts of that story provided good angst and drama in Bianca’s life, driving her into Wesley’s arms and moving the story forward. There was no need to rush it.

Because of the definitely of DUFF, I expected lots of teasing and even bullying in this book. But there wasn’t any. The only person to call Bianca a DUFF (aside from herself) was Wesley. But it totally changed the way she saw herself, her friends and those around her. It also didn’t help that he (somewhat) affectionately started calling her Duffy.

Overall, this book was nothing like I expected it to be. I enjoyed it very much and would definitely read more from the author.

REVIEW: Stepbrother Fixation by Kat Jackson, Lola Minx

Stepbrother Fixation (A Billionaire Romance) - Kat Jackson, Lola Minx

Confession: going with the title of this book, I seem to have a fixation with Stepbrother books. I’m determined to find some good one and in the grand scheme of Stepbrother books, this one is pretty decent. It’s no Prick by Sabrina Paige, but it was still a good read.

Unlike most of the stepbrother books out there, this one had a story with a build up to it. The author established a relationship between the characters and built intrigue around them that would come back to haunt them later in the story.

I liked Preston and Maddy together. Even though he was rich, he didn’t come off as a jerk that throws money around. Sure, he wasn’t opposed to dropping $500 on dinner or giving Maddy a $10K signing bonus for her new job, but he didn’t throw money around and show off with it.

I actually liked the slow build between Preston and Maddy. They didn’t really have any relationship to speak of prior to the start of the book when they run into each other. They had met a few times but that was it. They actually developed quite a nice rapport and friendship as Maddy went to work for Preston. But one quip from Maddy about Preston sleeping with his personal assistants and things became awkward, making them see each other differently.

I loved the fight that went from yelling and screaming to them working their frustration out another way ;) This author really knows how to write steamy scenes.

I have to say that I was a little surprised that Jane didn’t come back sooner to cause problems and it was a little predictable that she was working with Preston’s dad. I was glad to see his dad go down for his horrible actions but I wish more had happened to Maddy’s mom and Jane. They seemed to get off to easily.

Overall, this was a good read. The author hooked me and I couldn’t put the book down, I read it in one sitting.

REVIEW: The Ruby Circle (Bloodlines, #6) by Richelle Mead

The Ruby Circle - Richelle Mead

Wow. I can't believe it's over. It seems like I've waited forever for this book. I'm both sad and relieved that it's done.

After the previous book, I worried that this book would be boring since it wasn’t my favorite and there were parts I didn’t care for. But The Ruby Circle brought everything full circle. I’d almost forgotten about the reason Sydney was sent out to Palm Springs with Adrian and Jill in the beginning of the series. Most of the books focused on Sydney’s fight with the Alchemists and finding her own life & path that I’d forgotten the underlying story of protecting Jill and the throne for Lissa. Granted the threat that surrounded Jill in this book didn’t actually have anything to do with Lissa and the throne, but it still came back around to her, protecting her and finding her.

I made the mistake of starting this book before bed so I stayed up way to late reading, but I couldn’t put it down. I really do love Adrian and Sydney’s relationship. They just work well together, they complement each other very well. That’s what makes this book really sad. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to them. When The Vampire Academy ended, I was ready. But I’m not ready to let go of Sydney and Adrian yet.

I wasn’t pleased with Nina still being around. But I’ll admit that I loved the conclusion to that part of the story mainly because of the addition of Declan. I loved the little twist with him and would love to see a spin off series surrounding him as a teenager/adult.

I was glad to see some resolution come to the Alchemists chasing after Sydney and Adrian. This book was pretty much perfect except for the fact that it was the end and I’m not ready to let go. But on the other hand, I’m glad that the author didn’t stretch it out any more.

I shall miss Adrian and Sydney and will definitely revisit this series in the future. I also hope that the author will continue the world and we’ll see them again.

And for the final time in this series, here is my Adrian:

REVIEW: Forever Us by Caylie Marcoe

Forever Us - Caylie Marcoe

I seriously love Riley and Travis.

I loved seeing them get married.

My only complaint is that Travis called her Doll. I don't remember that from Choose Us. She was Riley or Riles.

I don't know what the author's plans are, but I would love to see a book for Taylor and Travis's brother!

REVIEW: The Sheik's Accidental Pregnancy by Leslie North

The Sheik's Accidental Pregnancy (The Botros Brothers Series) - Leslie North

This was...quite unenjoyable.

The story could have been great. However, I never once connected to any of the characters. I couldn't even picture them because there weren't descriptions.

I never believed that there was a connection between Sarah and Tariq. She was indifferent to him, nervous because he was the owner of the company he worked for, but I never got the impression that she was even remotely attracted to him. As for Tariq, he flatly hated Sarah. From the first moment he met her, he hated her. Again, I never felt like he was actually attracted to her. The first time they had sex, I had to go back to read it because I thought I missed something and couldn't figure out how him being rude to her led to them having sex.

My other issue was that throughout the whole book, I was being told what happened. I never once felt like I was immersed in the story.

REVIEW: Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead

Silver Shadows - Richelle Mead

I love this series. I love Sydney and I especially love Adrian.

However, I can’t say I loved this book. There were parts I loved, parts that were full of action and movement, but there were parts that were just boring too. Overall, I couldn’t put this down. From the moment I started, I was glued to my kindle. I only stopped when I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore.

The previous book had the worst cliffhanger ever. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the re-education center that Sydney was at. The author had dropped hints in previous books about how bad they were, but I never thought she would actually go there and show exactly how bad they were. I’m not complaining that she did, I just didn’t expect it from her or the books.

One of my favorite moments whas when Adrian and Sydney finally connected in their dreams. I was so glad that they were finally moving forward with escape/finding her. And of course, them together always equals great moments. They’re probably one of my favorite book couples ever.

I wasn’t expecting all the events in Vegas, but I love what Adrian did to make it special for Sydney. I want a guy like that. I also loved the scene on the airplane taking Adrian and Sydney back to court.

Throughout the book, Sydney’s POVs were always moving, something was always happening, there was always danger. But Adrian started to irritate me. I guess I was a little disappointed that he fell off the wagon to the extent he did. Especially when he started going days and weeks without looking for Sydney in his dreams. However, I also got the feeling that Nina will come back to play a part in the anti-Adrian/Sydney story in the final book. I can totally see her teaming up with Wesley.

My biggest disappointment was Lissa and Rose. The further away from Rose’s books (Vampire Academy series) I get, the less I like her and Lissa. I realize that things have changed, that Lissa is now queen and has other things on her mind, but she wouldn’t be where she was if not for the support of her friends. And last time I checked, Adrian was a friend of theirs. And it also pissed me off that they didn’t take him and his request for help seriously. Especially since they have a similar bond that Adrian has with Jill and they know that if he’s that upset that it will affect Jill. The more I see of Lissa, the less respect I have for her and the less I like her. I don’t think she cares about anyone but herself.

After the events in Vegas, and the reception back at court, it had a final feel to the story. So it left me wondering what more they would/could face in the next book. But the author definitely came up with something and dropped that little cliff in at the end. So now, I’m dying to read the next (and final) book of the series.

As always, my Adrian:
